Density balance (or hydrostatic balance) measures density primarily for solids and powders using buoyancy and Archimedes’ principle, while a density meter measures density primarily for liquids and gases using the oscillating U-tube method.

Density Balance (Hydrostatic Balance)

• How it works: It uses a standard analytical or precision balance equipped with a density determination kit (a beaker, a submerged basket or pan, and a temperature probe)
• Method: It weighs a solid sample twice—first suspended in the air, and a second time submerged in an auxiliary liquid of known density (like water or ethanol).
The balance software calculates the volume via water displacement and outputs the density.
