- Vacucare Tubes Sodium Citrate Blue Top 4.5ml. Blood Collection Tubes
A Vacutainer tubes with a light blue top containing 4.5ml of sodium citrate is primarily used for coagulation studies (PT/INR, aPTT) to assess blood clotting, find bleeding disorders, and monitor anticoagulant therapy, by preventing blood from clotting using sodium citrate to bind calcium.
These tubes must be filled to their exact vacuum volume (9:1 blood-to-anticoagulant ratio) for accurate results, often requiring a discard tube first if it’s not the first tube drawn, notes from {10, 12} and {10, 12}.
Key Uses
Vacucare Sodium Citrate Blue Top 4.5ml
Coagulation Tests: To measure Prothrombin Time (PT), Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (aPTT), and International Normalized Ratio (INR).
Bleeding/Clotting Disorders: Diagnosing issues like deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE) with tests like D-dimer.
Surgery & Therapy Monitoring: Screening patients before surgery or checking levels for those on blood thinners.
How it Works
Sodium Citrate: This anticoagulant works by binding to calcium ions in the blood, which are essential for the clotting cascade, thus stopping the blood from clotting.
Blood-to-Additive Ratio: A precise 9:1 ratio of blood to citrate is crucial; underfilling can cause falsely prolonged clotting times, hence the need to fill the tube completely or use a discard tube first.
