Million’s Reagent 500ml
R978.00
A solution that is usually made by dissolving mercury in concentrated nitric acid and diluting with water and that when heated with phenolic compounds gives a red coloration used as a test especially for tyrosine and proteins containing tyrosine.
Mainly used in qualitative analysis.
Million’s Reagent 500ml
Millon’s Reagent is primarily used in biochemistry and chemistry laboratories to detect the presence of tyrosine, the only amino acid containing a phenol group, and by extension, to indicate the presence of proteins that contain tyrosine.
How it works:
Millon’s Reagent, which is a solution of mercuric and mercurous ions in nitric and nitrous acid, reacts with the phenol group of tyrosine.
This reaction results in the formation of a pink to brick-red precipitate or solution, indicating a positive test for tyrosine.
Since almost all proteins contain tyrosine, Millon’s Reagent can be used as a general test for proteins, although it’s not specific and can also react with other phenolic compounds.
In summary:
Millon’s Reagent is used to detect tyrosine and, consequently, proteins in biological samples. The reagent reacts with tyrosine to produce a colored precipitate or solution, signaling the presence of tyrosine.
