Laboratory Emergency Shower Room

A laboratory emergency shower room (or station) is a critical first-aid measure for immediate decontamination of personnel who have been exposed to hazardous materials, such as corrosive chemicals, acids, alkalis, or biohazards. Its primary use is to quickly flush these substances from the body or clothing to prevent severe injuries.

Laboratory Emergency Shower Room Primary Uses
  • Chemical Splashes/Spills: The main function is to rapidly wash away hazardous chemicals from the skin or clothing to minimize contact time and prevent chemical burns or absorption of toxic materials.
  • Extinguishing Clothing Fires: The high volume of water provided by a safety shower can be used to quickly extinguish clothing that has caught fire.
  • Exposure to Biological or Radioactive Materials: In some cases, the showers are required for decontaminating individuals exposed to biohazardous or unsealed radioactive materials.
  • Flushing Away Other Irritants: The showers can also be used for exposure to other materials that pose a risk of injury to the body, such as extreme heat or excessive dust in high-dust areas.
Operating an Emergency Shower
In the event of an accident, rapid response is crucial to minimize injury. The general procedure is as follows:
  1. React Immediately: Move quickly to the nearest emergency shower, which should be accessible within 10 seconds (approximately 55 feet) of potential hazards.
  2. Activate the Shower: Pull the handle or lever down. The valve is designed to stay open automatically, allowing hands-free operation.
  3. Remove Contaminated Clothing: While standing under the continuous stream of water, immediately remove all contaminated clothing, including shoes and socks. This prevents the chemical from remaining in contact with the skin.
  4. Flush for at Least 15 Minutes: Remain under the water for a minimum of 15 minutes to ensure thorough decontamination. Rotate slowly to rinse all affected areas.
  5. Seek Medical Attention: After the initial flush, always seek immediate medical attention, even if injuries seem minor, as some chemical exposures can cause delayed reactions. A lab member should call emergency services while the victim is flushing.
