Chlorobenzene AR 2.5L
Discover the importance of this chemical grade in laboratory analysis and its applications for accurate results.
Chlorobenzene (C₆H₅Cl) is an aromatic organic compound used in educational and research laboratories primarily as an NMR/IR reference standard, a high-boiling solvent, and a reagent for organic synthesis.
Chlorobenzene AR 2.5L
[Application]: Roles in the Laboratory
IR & NMR Calibration/Fingerprinting: The characteristic Infrared spectrum of chlorobenzene is frequently used in spectroscopy labs as a reference or “fingerprint” to identify aromatic bond vibrations (C-H aromatic stretches >3000 cm⁻¹, C=C ring stretches ~1400–1600 cm⁻¹, and C-Cl stretches). It is also used as an NMR reference or standard.
Reaction Medium (Solvent): Due to its high boiling point (131.7°C), chemical stability, and polarity, it is utilised as an inert solvent for elevated-temperature reactions, interfacial polymerisation, and crystallisation.
Synthesis Precursor: Labs use it as a starting material to demonstrate electrophilic aromatic substitution reactions (such as nitration or halogenation) or to synthesise aniline derivatives and dyes

⚠️ Safety Guardrails & Hazards
Toxicity: It is toxic and can irritate the skin, eyes, and respiratory system. Prolonged or high-level exposure can cause damage to the liver, kidneys, and central nervous system.
Flammability: It is a flammable liquid. Keep it away from open flames, sparks, and high heat sources (flash point is 27°C / 80.6°F).
Handling: Always handle within a chemical fume hood using proper PPE (nitrile gloves, safety googles). Do not pour down the drain; collect in designated halogenated waste containers.
